The airline that shrunk the world

Juan Trippe was the founder of Pan American Airlines. He started the airlines because he believed that international travel should and could be enjoyed by everyone, not just the rich. With that thought in mind, he concieved the idea of ‘tourist class’ fares from New York City to London, England. With this restructuring of air travel and cutting the pricing of an airline ticket by more than 1/2 he helped usher in the commercial jet age.

With the introduction of new jet aircraft with the newly designed jet engines air travel times were now cut to hours vs. days. Prior to the introduction of air travel, many people who traveled from New York to London would take a cruise which would average 4-6 days.

Trippe was being interviewed during this new introduction period of jet airline service and stated matter of factly ” In one fell swoop, we have shrunken the world.”

This iconic airline is no longer in service but,  it is true that the world did indeed shrink with the introduction of commercial airlines, because even now anyone can travel any where in the world and all in less that 24 hours! Though I personally, wouldn’t mind being able to leisurely cruise the world on board a luxury cruise ship and take my time exploring. With the world being shrunk by the airlines those so many years ago, just helped us all open our eyes to all the adventures and cultural events we can learn from exploring new destinations.
